Cheri Krull introduced Jim Colby, GreenUp Jamestown founder and a former director and curator of the Weeks Gallery at Jamestown Community College.

The GreenUp Jamestown initiative was co-founded Jim and The Reverend Luke Fodor of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.  The idea for GreenUp Jamestown was hatched among a conversation between Reverend Luke and Jim as they discussed Chautauqua County’s natural resources and reflected on local and global environmental challenges.

Both men felt that the Chautauqua region possessed a unique set of organizations that might collaborate and cooperate for GreenUp Jamestown.  It was decided to re-fresh the local Earth Day Celebrations into a pure grass-roots effort.

Fodor and Colby also learned that former Mayor and Lieutenant Governor, Stan Lundine, who is also a St. Luke’s parishioner, joined hands with city employees, the Kiwanis Club and concerned citizens to participate in the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

After conversations with key partners, the decision was made to move ahead with the plan for GreenUp Jamestown and promote the initiative to the community with eight weeks of green activities in March and April.
