Rotarily Yours - July 29, 2024

President Marion Beckerink called the meeting to order and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Paulette Klein gave the Invocation.

Michelle Jones introduced and welcomed guest Alyssa Chamberlain from Journey’s End.

Marion thanked Jen Swan-Leuz for being today’s Greeter and Sue Jones for writing the weekly Rotarily Yours.

Kristin Melville asked each member to be sure and let her know your classification – so that you can be partnered with someone in the same profession when we meet with the Jamestown Young Professionals Group in September. If you weren’t at the meeting, just send Kristen a note by email or voice mail OR she will assign you a profession.

The Golf Committee met this morning but does not have results yet because they are still waiting for an invoice from Moon Brook Country Club.

President Marion reminded us to attend the Camp Onyahsa Bonfire and music with Randy Graham and Tim Edborg in Dewittville at 7PM on August 11. Our Club has sponsored this time at Camp Onyahsa for people with disabilities for quite a few years and it is a wonderful chance for each of us to see and remember what we have done to foster this wonderful recreation time for these folks.

George Harper was recently in Denver on business for Science Friday and attended the Denver North East Rotary meeting. He reported about our Club and its activities with the Books ‘n Bibs, the Extend the Welcome, the Mexico Water Filter project and the Bikes to School in Singapore project. This club has only 13 members!

Don’t forget August 1 is CHQ Day at Chautauqua Institution and Eric Gansworth, author of “Under the Skin” will be the featured speaker at the 3:30pm Hall of Philosophy lecture.

Randy Sweeney had our speaker draw the winning number for the 50-50 raffle - $57 went to Phil Cala!

Dave Painter paid several bucks to Sergeant-at-Arms Doug Conroe for 2 Gingers sponsorship of the upcoming Celtic Festival. Kristin Melville paid for her photo in the paper advertising the upcoming Shades of Pink golf tournament to benefit breast cancer. Greg Jones paid for Sue Jones’ photo in the Gazette with Vince Horrigan’s dog Katie. Phil Cala paid for his part in the winning team of the golf tournament. He also offered to speak for 15 minutes to anyone who would like a stroke-by-stroke description of the winning match for a $5 fee. Dan Heitzenrater paid to acknowledge Buffalo First’s naming the CCIDA as number 1 in Western New York and he also paid for the wonderful new rebranding of the Chautauqua County Chamber now known as CHQ Chamber. Ruth paid for prompt repair of her obnoxiously noisy hatchback at no charge from a local car dealership AND she also paid for the receipt of a notification from a collection agency for a $3.71 long overdue bill!  And, Chris Anderson paid for Denise Jones' recognition in Buffalo Business First as one of the most influential women in WNY!

Marion paid a Happy Buck for Russ Diethrick returning. Michelle Jones paid for receiving her master’s degree Certificate in banking from Penn State University after 3 years of study, sponsored by Northwest Bank. And finally, Russ Diethrick paid so that everyone else could line up and pay $1 because they belong to our wonderful Rotary organization.

Stories
Northwest Arena & Kid Zone - Keith Martin and John Kinder

Jim Smith introduced todays speakers. Keith spoke first and gave some history on the building of the twin pad arena to help grow the downtown Jamestown area and increase economic impact downtown. Keith joined the staff at the arena 6 years ago after a career in college athletics. He instituted the ice bumper cars and the backyard curling activities to increase attendance and use of the arena for activities other than ice skating and ice hockey. The Arena Club was remodeled, and an atrium area was also added.

Since the addition and the increased activities, revenues have increased by 550% and the arena has now become a community center that is open 347 days a year! The recent 16 team ice hockey tourney had a $396,000 economic impact on the downtown area and the New York State Hockey championship had an economic impact of $280,000 for just one weekend!

Keith introduced John Kinder who is the Program Director of TheZone which will occupy a 15000 square foot area on the second floor to engage kids.

The program will INSPIRE, DREAM and GROW our young people and TheZone has partnered with BOCES in a cooperative service education vendor program that is reimbursed by New York State.

The arena has already sponsored a Harrison Phillips Event fostering interaction between young athletes and a handicapped individual, who passed away shortly after this presentation. Next year Harrison Phillips (Minnesota Vikings/ former Buffalo Bill) will sponsor a Special Olympics program to further this interaction.

Keith informed the Rotarians that TheZone just received two foundation grants and there is one more outstanding that will complete that level of financing, leaving a shortfall of $175,000. A husband and wife have stepped up to issue a challenge grant – they have donated $75,000 and pledged to match $25,000 dollar for dollar.

As of today, all attractions for TheZone have been built and will be delivered and installed by the end of September.

Kinder also spoke to his activities with The Chop It Up – Building Men program and how our local youth are struggling. Chop It Up provides a safe space for at risk youth to flourish.

Marion told the gentlemen that a donation to the Polio Fund of The Rotary Foundation will be made in their honor and will inoculate four children who will never know the scourge of polio in their lifetime.

Sports played a major role in John’s upbringing and have helped shape his ever-evolving leadership style. During his time at Syracuse University as a member of the football program, John realized his passion for youth and at that time began seeking out opportunities to invest in local communities as a mentor to kids. John holds a BA in Communication from Syracuse University and an MA in Higher Education Administration from Stony Brook University. John currently resides in Jamestown, NY with his wife and two sons. Aside from his work at Northwest Arena, John serves on the Chautauqua Striders Board of Directors, coaches high school football, and recently started up a focus group for adolescent boys called “Chop It Up.” The Chop It Up- Building Men program was created to serve as a safe-haven, social outlet, and positive learning environment for at-risk youth. Mentorship, Community Engagement, Character Development and Life-Skills are all elements featured in these monthly meetings.  John is optimistic for the future of Northwest Arena and TheZone and looks forward to making a profound impact on the lives of others.
