Rotarily Yours - January 27, 2025

Today’s meeting occurred at New Flyer, a bus parts manufacturer in Jamestown. The sky was sunny and blue. Our own Vickie McGraw and Elegant Edibles provided box lunches and approximately 40 Rotarians and guests attended.

President Marion Beckerink presided, leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Wally Wollenzien delivered another inspirational poem by heart as the invocation.

Ellen Ditonto, BPU business development coordinator, who helped us contact New Flyer, and Fran Lapinski, MD, were visiting guests. Brandon Odell and Matt Clark, prospective members of Hamister Hospitality also attended.

Steve Sandberg and his wife Pat won the 50/50 in the amount of $27 Tory Irgang sold the tickets.

Max Eimiller reminded Rotarians that the Mini-Golf Bar Crawl Fundraiser is set around the City for Saturday, February 1, beginning at the DoubleTree at 11:30 a.m. with sign-ups—teams of four pay $80. Golfers also purchase chances to win gift baskets full of goodies and/or buy 50/50 raffle tickets.  Raffle tickets and alcohol can be donated to Max or Michelle Jones at Lakewood Northwest for the baskets. Participating hole locations include Pearl City Hops, Brazil, The Pub, Haggy’s 4 Below, Northwest Arena and Wicked Warren’s. The locations also are contributing to the cause.

Sergeant-at-Arms Doug Conroe fined Emily Cama for her picture in the paper with the WCA Foundation and Joanna Dahlbeck for missing meetings.

In Happy Bucks, Joanna reported that she had had extensive dental surgery and will be back in attendance. Joni Blackman explained that Emily Cama had helped her buy a new house on Weeks Street in the city.  Marion Beckerink announced that the 90-day “Walk for Polio” challenge ended and those who completed the project each received a medal for raising money to fight polio while walking at least 10 minutes daily.

Rhys Preston - General Manager of New Flyer

Becky Robbins welcomed General Manager of New Flyer – Jamestown, Rhys Preston who has been with the company here since it opened in October 2016. Rhys brought over 35 years of manufacturing experience to the Jamestown Community College/Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency supported NYS Start -Up efforts of New Flyer of America. Leveraging 450 years of combined experience, NFI is leading the electrification of mass mobility around the world. With zero-emission buses and coaches, infrastructure, and technology, NFI meets today’s urban demands for scalable smart mobility solutions. Together, NFI is enabling more livable cities through connected, clean, and sustainable transportation.

Currently, the Jamestown plant has 106 employees, most of whom are from the immediate Jamestown and surrounding area. Employees are compensated with a very comprehensive wage and benefits package ranked in the top 10% of Chautauqua County and are supported by the IUE/CWA Union. They are currently operating on one shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays in the renovated Quality Market and adjoining Drugstore on Fluvanna Ave.  A recent renovation was completed in July of 2024 to support increasing production demands in 2025 and beyond.

Tours followed Rhys’ talk in three groups, including two employee-leaders, Jason Burt, Materials Manager and Matt Storms, Production Cell Leader.

Following the tours, Rhys visited with Rotarians who had questions and who expressed appreciation for the “field trip.” The session was closed at 1 p.m.
