Ukraine Relief. Any Club members who make a donation to the Rotary Disaster Relief fund for Ukraine, please send Ruth proof of your donation. The Vision Committee is working to match club member donations up to $500. To make a donation, go to: https://my.rotary.org/en/disaster-response-fund

In their meeting last week the Vision Committee also voted to defer consideration of additional funding to Uganda School Project to next fiscal year, since we have just completed a major project in Pakistan. If you have any thoughts on last week’s presentation, please contact Ruth or a member of the Vision Cmte.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Cmte. will be holding a meeting on Tuesday, April 12 at noon at the CRCF office on Spring Street and also via zoom. Anyone who would like to join us, please let Ruth know.

Youth Exchange: We are still in need of three host families for the student who will be coming for the school year next fall. Each family hosts the student for about 4 months. Right now we are focusing our search on Bemus Point or Southwestern school districts. If you know anyone who might be a great host, contact Cheri Krull or Chris Anderson. It is not a requirement to have a student in high school, but it helps.

Birthday Table. Joni Blackman spoke about how the Rotary Foundation is assisting in Ukraine. Of the 62 Rotary Clubs in Ukraine, only one club has suspended meetings due to the invasion. There is a special committee of all the clubs that meets two times a day on line to discuss issues and how they can help. The Ukraine clubs provide 1. Help to hospitals and to the two disaster response grants. 2. Coordinating humanitarian aid coming from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. 3. Helping families leaving the country. Message to us on behalf of Rotary Ukraine: Thanks for your help. Lobby governments to push for peace.

Stories
Getting Ahead in a Just Getting By World
President-Elect John Healy with Terri Johnson and Beth Jermain of The Resource Center who presented on the program InvestU

Amy Rohler introduced today's program. When Amy had just moved to Jamestown, Charlie Hodges was one of the first people she met. He gave her a book with a curriculum for people in poverty. She thought it was an amazing curriculum, but there was no way to teach it. Twelve years later The Resource Center has made it work.

She introduced Terri Johnson who is Director of Employment and Community Based Services at TRC, where she has worked for 21 years. Terri works on finding and creating employment options for people with disabilities as well as employee retention programs. She is a certified facilitator in the program Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World. Beth Jermain has worked for TRC 31 years and is the Support Options Administrator. She is also a Certified Facilitator Housing Navigator and also with Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World.

InvestU is a series of workshops following the curriculum Getting Ahead in a Just Getting by World. It is geared for those living in poverty, specifically ALICE Households. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained Employed, commonly called “the working poor.”  It is designed to help people problem solve and look into the future, rather than focusing on the past. Program participants are called investigators. They are working to learn how to set the goals they need to change their life situation. It is modeled after the Bridges out of Poverty framework. It’s a very intensive program with 16 three hour lessons.

There have been two sessions, and they have been very successful. Each session costs about $10,000. The main costs are the $25 stipend each participant investigator receives for each lesson attended, and the meals provided.

You may ask why is this initiative important?
  • Poverty is a real struggle for people. This program gives them tools to make change and move forward, building assets.
  • People get lost trying to navigate through systems that are supposed to help them.
  • People get buried in the day-to-day struggles and they lose hope that they will be able to change their situations.
  • Each person has a different experience to bring. They support each other and develop ties.
  • Each person learns that they have valuable things to say, and gives them a voice.
