-January 10 will be a special presentation of the Centennial Project, celebrating the Rotary Club of Jamestown’s 100 anniversary in 2019. A group, spearheaded by Mike Roberts, has been working with City of Jamestown and CPL Design on a new welcome sign on North Main. The design will go before the City Planning Commission in December, and the membership will receive a full update.  

 

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee is meeting Thursday, December 16 at noon at the Jackson Center and also via zoom. Anyone interested can contact Ruth Lundin.

 

Red Kettle: Joanna Dahlbeck reported 40 hours of bell ringing have been completed, exceeding the goal for this year.

 

Literacy Committee Diana Meckley reports they are looking for leisure books for the three washeteria kiosks. Bring to the Holiday Party or donate any time we meet.

 

Youth Services Committee: Cheri enthusiastically reported that the Committee has selected 2 outbound students Josie Mason and Sophia "Sam" Kennelley for Long Term exchange next year. Both students have been patiently waiting to participate in the program since the Pandemic began. A third student, who was selected as an alternate, Soren Kyser, will be sponsored by Jill Norton's (Buffalo Sunrise) club. Soren's mother Heather (maiden name Oquist) is a past Rotary Exchange Student who was sponsored by our club. This means there will be three inbound students, so we will be responsible for finding three host families for each of the three inbounds. Please let Cheri know if you, or someone you know from Maple Grove, Jamestown or Southwestern would be interested.

Birthday Table:  Sue Jones presented the December birthdays. Remember that the Rotary Foundation receives birthday table money. Donations to Foundation go to projects including clean water and sanitation, assistance to mothers and children, peace, education, and economic stability for at risk communities. Your gift has a far greater impact than an individual gift because it is a part of a greater pool. The Foundation identifies, projects, runs them and provides oversight of the funds spent. Each gift helps us meet increased demand. Right now, we are trying to raise $50 million for Polio Plus which will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. December birthdays include: Paul Cesana, Andrew Goodell, Dave Howard, Steve Sandberg, Greg Jones, David Painter, Walt Pickut, Hiroko Walters, and Jim Smith who appropriately won the free lunch since he is celebrating a special birthday.

 

Sergeant at Arms: Vince Horrigan fined the following people. Infinity has 2 new instructors. One is our Melissa Meyers. Noah Goodling has been hired by the Chautauqua Funders Group to lead a capacity building initiative in Chautauqua County. UWSCC has been named as the non-profit to receive donations from the Jamestown High School Boys and Girls Club Tournaments. Wind turbine blades were seen lying in a field. The picture was in the P-J and Andy Goodell is seeking recommission bonds. Kathy Burch was fined as her husband Mark got a hole in one.

 

Trivia: The first Rotary meeting was held in what location (Chicago) what year (1905). The first Rotary service project was in Chicago and was public toilets. The first Paul Harris Fellow was awarded for how much money ($1,000). All the following were/are Rotarians: King Farouk of Egypt, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Pope Francis, Hillary Clinton. The Rotary wheel stands for civilization and movement. The first motto of Rotary was: He profits most who serves best.

 

Randy Sweeney announced this is his last meeting in person until spring. He is off to Florida.
