November 28, 2022 - Rotary Meeting Social Event

TODAY’S CHAIRMAN: President John Healy led the Pledge of Allegiance, The National Anthem and The Rotary 4 Way Test.

INVOCATION: Vince Horrigan lifted all in prayers for a season of gratitude; The country we live in and those who defend it. We are thankful for family, friends, Rotary and visitors from far away countries as a reminder of the Rotary motto, world peace through understanding. “As Rotarians, we can be part of world peace.”

VISITING ROTARIANS and GUESTS:

Sue Jones introduced Sally Naetzker Baer, native of Ashville, NY. She left here in her early 20s to pursue academics in the New York City metro area. Sally married Tom Baer here in 2001 and served in Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Nepal doing community development, teaching English, and basic healthcare. Both largely involved in the surrounding community with a toy shop called 6 Baers in Lakewood, NY, Sally visits the Jamestown Rotary Club to share about her journey serving the people of Ukraine. When the full scale invasion happened, shocked and appalled, there was choice to be made to do something.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Vice President Marion Beckerink welcomed Dr. Frances Karpinski and George Harper from RTPI. As well as 4 guest international students from SUNY JCC Global Learning. From Russia, Anita Kolumbintseva, Co-President of the student led campus International Club, along with Co-Secretaries and students, from Congo, Everina Mustafa-Bennett and from South Africa, Jaden Pillay and Paledi Lamani.

December 5th - A’Cappela choir performance at the First Lutheran Church, Lunch at 11:15 and performance at 12noon

December 12th - Annual Meeting for July 2023 Board inductions and other club business

December 19th - Christmas Holiday party, location TBD

December 1st - Vision committee meeting at 12noon at Community Foundation or on Zoom

Proposed search for technical savvy volunteers to develop communications

December 19th - Michelle Jones and the Social committee are surveying for the holiday party and will post details

The DEI committee met in efforts to expand the Rotary reach with a letter for inviting new potential members and guests
 
YOUTH EXCHANGE:

There were 2 potential candidates for youth exchange. Communications from the Youth Exchange have occurred. There will most likely be updates on Monday 12/5

Rudi recognized Ruth Lundin and Max Eimiller, Co-community advisors for the SUNY JCC Global Learning student International Club, who gave their time, support and advice for the Go Global International Fair that was held on Tuesday November 15th. There was another special thank you to all who gave their time at the Rotary International table. The table was well represented and there were lots of visitors to the Rotarian table throughout the whole fair. Attendance was numerous with campus students, community members, faculty and staff as well as an additional 120 area high school students who experienced the international student panel discussions, round table discussions with an up close visit with international students, and a global action citizen panel represented with Ruth Lundin and David & Marissa Troxell.

Additionally, international students designed tables that represented culture, traditions, food, language, history, architecture and historical landmarks as well as make and take items, games and prizes. There was an international menu prepared by the on campus cafe staff as well as traditional Indian Katak fold dance; Bollywood style. A local artist, native to India, presented her traditional dance works with a group of dancers. There were many who participated and learned the dance at the end of the fair.

Michelle Jones is the new area manager for Northwest, small business “Shop Small” on the previous Saturday, Rotary magazine trivia.

HAPPY BUCKS:

President John Healy gave Happy Bucks for the involvement with the SUNY JCC Go Global Fair as well as the nice evening prepared by the Social committee Steeners.

Amy Rohler informs us of a new United Way initiative, a social media campaign called “12 Days of Gratitude” follow United Way of Chautauqua county on social media to watch all the mentions of community partners who contribute to the United Way.

Max Eimiller talked about his Aunt who held a benefit in honor of Max’s cousin and all the opportunities to serve the community

Sally Baer - Support for Ukraine
Sally presented the grass roots efforts to help in the aid of the people of Ukraine. She spent time getting aid to people and help get people out of troubled areas.
 
9000 lbs. of military drones and vests got to the country via Logistics Plus in Erie, Pa. 13 ton of aid has been brought to the Ukraine through about 700 donors and supporters. A value of over 650,000 facilitated by Sally. 2 guest houses were created in Poland, $5000 worth of food, sleeping bags, and medical aid sent all through Kiev, Ukraine. Over 27 flights have gone into Warsaw, Poland through many available online donor channels. More importantly, life saving military tourniquets were necessary to provide. The work is making a difference especially during a dark time which a fight for freedom in the Ukraine rattles the entire world in its fight for freedom.
