The annual financial report of the club, having been announced and distributed in December by Treasurer Joni Blackman, and reviewed by members, was accepted and approved by unanimous consent.
Marion Beckerink provided a Vision Committee update. She noted that less than 50% of children under the age of five are red to everyday. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that “reading aloud is a critical part of language development. It is never too early to read to your babies and toddlers, as connections are formed in their brain at a very young age which bills language, literacy, and social and economic skills and is an important part of their development.”
As a result the vision committee has committed over the next two years to equip 1200 babies with those skills through Rotary’s “Books and Bibs” project in partnership with UPMC providing copies of the well-known and popular children’s book Good Night Moon and a bib that says “Read to Me.” Club members were invited to join in fundraising for this project to help create our next generation of leaders.
Membership, fundraising, membership participation, and leadership development goals were then discussed and a call was made for club engagement in these areas. Community service projects and Polio Plus are also on target for meeting annual goals, as well as Interact and inbound and outbound exchange student goals. Past president Kevin Sixby called for continued full engagement by all members in meetings and projects and especially in fundraising to support national and local service projects.
