Today's Chairwoman: President Ruth Lundin led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the National Anthem and the recitation of the Four Way Test.

Invocation: The invocation was given by Mike Roberts

Visiting Rotarians and Guests: Ken Omeruo – soon to become a Rotarian

Announcements:

Joni Blackman, Foundation Chairperson attended a District grants training and District Celebration at Niagara on the Lake. At the event two awards were presented to the club.

Joni called on John Healy to come up to receive two awards given to our club at this event.

One was a certificate for The End Polio Now Campaign for raising at least $1500, the second was the Light House Award which requires a club to meet all its goals during the year.  John graciously accepted the award, giving the club members the credit for all their hard work which enabled the club to receive this award.  Joni also stressed the importance of each member’s gift to the foundation each year and the impact that it can have.

Bob Anderson, RED KETTLE Chair, announced that the sign-ups for bell ringing are online on the Website.  Bell ringing for Rotarians begins the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Mike Roberts announced a meeting after the meeting that will last only 10 minutes and work will get done.

John Healy- Gebbie reached out to John about creating a “back of the sign” mural/picture/collage for the Jamestown entrance to the city sign.  John, Joni & Mike have reached out to a Buffalo architect to begin development of such.  If club members have any high-resolution pictures that may be appropriate, please contact one of the committee members.

Ruth Lundin announced that she will be giving reports on the Board meetings once a month.  This month she spoke about the budget.  She encouraged the fundraising committee to come up with fundraising ideas to increase budget income to cover all of expenses currently being taken from members’ pockets or Rotary savings, i.e., Rotary coffee, T-shirts, mini golf bar crawl, etc. but also as an awareness builder. Ruth suggested all committees consider budget amounts that would increase their visibility and impact in the community.

Mike Roberts – offered himself and Mark Olson to copy brochures or posters for committees.

The Rotary Annual meeting is December 18th. Please try to attend as a quorum is needed.

Youth Exchange:

Cheri Krull, Youth Exchange Chair, announced that interviews will be held on Wednesday at the Resource Center; interested members are welcome to attend, please let her know if you will be there.  Also, the Youth exchange kids will be coming on Saturday.  If any members are interest in attending the Comedy Center with the kids, let her know.

Stories
Tamu Reinhardt, Coordinator of Family & Community Engagement (FACE) and Inclusivity for the Jamestown City School District

Tamu Reinhardt was introduced by Amy Rohler.  Ms. Reinhardt is the Coordinator of Family & Community Engagement (FACE) and Inclusivity for the Jamestown City School District. The FACE and Inclusivity is expanding family, community and business partnerships designed to increase engagement and have a positive impact on student achievement.  In addition, she oversees the English as a New Language program, is in the process of developing an Equity and Inclusion plan and working to develop a dual language program at Love Elementary School.  Mrs. Reinhardt also acts as the district liaison for recently resettled families through Journey’s End.

Tamu graduated from Jamestown High School, received a B.A. in Spanish Education from the University of Buffalo and a Master of Arts in Public Relations from Ball University. She holds a NYS School District Administration Certification and a Cornell University Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion.

Mrs. Reinhardt spoke about refugee programs and technology available to students and adults in Jamestown. She shared current demographic information at Jamestown High School (JHS). JHS has students speaking seven different languages.  It is projected that the Hispanic population will decline, and the Asian Population will increase.   Economic conditions, climate change, authoritarian governments, and gangs prompt immigration.  Mrs. Reinhardt shared that some of our refugees are working but to increase hours they need to learn English.   Refugees are very grateful to be here; they really want to work. Just because people don’t speak English doesn’t mean they don’t understand it.  It takes 1-3 years to be comfortable to speak our language; to be literate 7-9 years.  For more information on Mrs. Reinhardt ‘s excellent presentation, please go the Rotary website and view this program in its entirety.

Mrs. Reinhardt gave thanks to Rotary for its purchase of earbuds for JHS students.  These earbuds are primarily used for those who have no English language skills.  They come with an app for learning which translates English into the language needed by the student. There are many electronic translation options available.  JHS immigrant students really want to learn our language.

English classes for adults have begun and will be held 2 times a week with more classes scheduled to begin.  Workforce readiness will be the focus of day classes.  As an aside, she shared that in Jamestown there is a lost generation not attending schools.
