Chautauqua County has 42 fire depts. – 2 are career, meaning paid. About 90% of all fire depts. are all volunteer. New York State has brought forth incentives if you join a fire service, $200 tax incentive as well as a tax credit trying to keep fire dept. members.
80-85% of the callouts are Emergency services NOT fires; including water rescue, and technical rescue. Joining the fire department at an early age often leads to careers in the medical fields.
